Front cover mockup

This is a mockup of my RnB magazine front cover.  The main aim of me doing this was to get an idea of the style and the sell lines.  Sell lines such as, free headphones, will capture a music lovers eye, also putting it in a vibrant red colour will draw their attention to it.  The style of the model needed to be cool and a bit edgy so i added the sunglasses to add this feel.  The title is slightly worn down which adds the careless feel of R&B.

Drawn mockup front covers

These are hand drawn mockup front covers.  I did this as it allows me to sketch out ruffly where i want everything to be and the different banners and circle stickers to pop out and stand out to the customer.

These are different shot types that i could do in my final photoshoot.  It ranges from a close up to a long shot.  I have also done a  bad framing close up to see what i shouldnt be doing as all of the model isnt within the photo.  I took a group shot to practice the positioning of the models, this is important as everyone needs to be within the frame and in a structured position.  I took a posed shot so that i could practice the position of the model and achieve a good shot where the model doesnt look flat up against the wall the model now has shape and a different structure.

Costume mood board

This is an idea of the clothing that my model will be wearing for my front cover.  The clothes have an edgy style which is often linked to R&B.  I have used minimal colour as this seems to be a common theme.  Accessories like a beanie and a snapback add to the RnB style.  Clothing like crop tops are common as flesh is on show, the models aren't covered up in say jumpers, which makes the stle more street and edgy.   The rips in the jeans also show style and maybe carelessness and freedom to do what they like with their clothing, which ties in with the RnB style.  The chunky heel gives an edgy and an adult vibe about the look.

Colour scheme mood board

I chose red as my colour scheme because I wanted a colour that would be eye catching to the buyer.  Therefore my magazine on the shelves would stand out making the buyer drawn to it. Red is a very bold edgy colour, sometimes related with danger or alert.  I think this links in with my genre of R&B because the sound of the music is very edgy and some of the time the lyrics are related to danger, such as crime. On the other hand, red can also be related to love which can also be involved in typical R&B lyrics.

Font ideas

I have chosen the highlighted font AR DESTINE because it’s bold and edgy.  This fits in with my chosen genre R&B because it’s the same description as the music, bold and edgy.  The style for my costume is also edgy and my colour scheme is red, which is a bold, vibrant colour which will catch the buyer’s eye.

In the end I found a font from the website www.dafont.com.  I had to do this as I had a technical difficulty with the computer.  In the end I'm glad I chose this font as it fits in with the style of the genre because it is edgy, worn and bold.

Double page spread mock up (drawn)

This is a drawn mockup of my double page spread.  I have done this so that i can get a feel of where i am going to place everything on the page and the amount of text/images there is going to be on each page.

Contents mock up (drawn)

This is a drawn mockup of my contents page.  I drew this to allow myself to set out the page accordingly and change anything if I wanted.  I did this to develop my ideas.

Front cover mock up (drawn)

This is a drawn up version of my front cover.  I drew this to develop my ideas of how I am going to set out the page as this is important so everything can fit on the page without overlapping.  It also allows me to think about where I am going to place the sell lines that I want to stand out the most

LIIAR analysis of a music magazine double page spread

LANGUAGE:  The colour used in the spread is very minimal.  It includes red, which is the most eye catching and is the main image.  They have also included blue to highlight certain words that they want to catch your attention.  The setting of the photo is white so that the text is easy to read and the outline of the women is clear.
INSTITUTION:  This magazine will be a widely known magazine unlike something like a college magazine which would be local.
IDEOLOGY:  The magazine may be popular within the music scene depending on how many sales it gets.
AUDIENCE:  The target audience for this magazine will be music lovers.  Its for anyone that is interested in music.  The person/celebrity might decipher whether the person buys the magazine, whether they like them/their music.
REPRESENTATION:  The spread seems to have a youthful vibe with the different dance moves appearing at the top of the page.  They are wanting the spread to be fun and appealing to the audience.

LANGUAGE:  The colour used in the photo is very minimal.  It includes very neutral colours, most the same tone.  They could have used this colour because of the person/celebrity.  It could also be linked to the genre or the age of the women, or just the particular theme of the shoot.  The setting of the photo is plain and is the same colour as her outfit.  This keeps the focus on the outline of the women and the text.
INSTITUTION:  This magazine is called Vibe.  This magazine will be a widely known magazine unlike something like a college magazine which would be local.
The contents might entice a certain audience too.  The magazine also includes fashion which may appeal to a wider audience than just music.
REPRESENTATION:  The contents is informative as it lists what's involved in the magazine, such as, an interview, gossip and advice.

LANGUAGE:  The colour used in the photo is very minimal.  It includes yellow, blue and a hint of green in the title.  These colours could be used most issues or it could be used to catch the buyers eye.  Colour can also be linked to the person/celebrity on the front cover.  For example, their signature colour (Justin Bieber and purple) or their gender or music genre.  The setting of the photo is a dark and what appears to be music speakers.  This links in with the fact that it is a music magazine.
INSTITUTION:  This magazine is called Billboard.  This magazine will be a widely known magazine unlike something like a college magazine which would be local.
REPRESENTATION:  The magazine seems to be very forward with the main story being 'RHIANNA THE WORLD IS HERS'.  Rhianna is also staring straight at the camera with a quite stern look which could mean she is determined, which links into the sell line.

Spider diagram

This spider diagram shows the different conventions that are common to be in the front cover, double page spread and the contectent page of a music magazine.  I have also took into consideration the target audience.  this depends on the genre.  The conventions that are included will be different by which genre the magazine is.  For example the main image will appear a different style and the sell lines will be trying to capture a different type of audience.

Questionnaire

The purpose of doing this questionnaire was to ask the public what they where looking for/expecting with a music magazine.  For example, I asked them their favourite genre of music magazine.  This let me know which one the majority preferred, which ever one had the most votes has the biggest target audience.  The genre R&B won the vote with pop coming closely second and country coming last, the reasoning I did R&B.  the second question I asked was, how much would you pay for a music magazine?  The majority of people said from £1.00 to £1.50.  I chose £1.50 as this is the maximum most people would pay for the magazine and I myself think this is an appropriate amount if the content of the magazine is to a good standard.  The third question I asked was, what catches your eye the most about a front cover?  The results of this question was the main image.  this may be because of the artist/celebrity on the front of the magazine.  For example, they might be interested in them or their favourite artist therefore enticing them in to buy it.  the second thing that the customers looked at as the sell lines.  these are important as in once again they could contain their favourite artist or could contain something enticing for example a competition to get involved in.  What came last in the questionnaire was the price, this is obvious as in if the price is too high people are put off by buying it.  The fourth and final question I asked was, what one thing would you expect to find in a music magazine?  the top answer was interviews.  This could be because of a person that they have certain interest in or that is big at the moment within music, people just want to know a bit more about them and their music.  The second answer was festival information.  this interests people as its an occasion that people look forward to and can see and get involved with the artists they like.  People in general always want to see their favourite artist play live.  The last answer was the charts.  This may be because some people aren't necessarily interested in the charts as they like to find their own music and aren't necessarily bothered about who is at the top of the charts.  Also you can easily find this information else where, for example, a music channel on the TV (4Music, VIVA)or iTunes.

Conventions of a magazine

RnB magazine mood board

Each of these RnB magazines are different as in they all have different poses/positions of the model.  When you first look at a magazine the main image of the model on the front of the magazine draws your eye so its very important to get the look right.  Each one have at least one vibrant colour to either draw the eye to the masthead, sell lines or the main image.  The makeup has been differently one on of the magazines which will clearly catch the eye of a customer.  The bold desisions that you make on your front cover a cruetial to attract customers.  The costume of the model is important as it has to match the genre and be bold at the same time.  Some magazines but their models in minimal clothing to attract the buyers eye.  Or they will put a very famous/popular artist on the front cover at that time to atract buyers if they are in the limelight at that time or they have brought out popular music that is at the top of the charts at that moment.  The sell lines need to be short and to the point.  If they have even a single word in there in bold colour or bigger font that will catch the buyers eye at a topic that they are intersted in, they will be tempted to pick it up and buy it.

Production plan

  • I researched existing front covers/contents/double page spreads to analyse the conventions and get to grips with different techniques and styles of how to set my magazine out.
  • Then I researched music genres to choose which one best fits me and my research.  I then analysed the conventions again to fit my genre.  I also researched what would be appropriate for that target audience, for example colour schemes, eye catching sell lines, what to include in my contents, the edgy look of the whole magazine.
  • I carried out questionnaires/video questionnaire to back up my research and find evidence from what the public like so I could make my magazine pages to fit my target audience.  I asked questions like, the price of the magazine and what they would expect to see in the magazine.
  • I made drawn drafts/mock-up to sketch my ideas.
  • I also made computer drafts/mock-up to create a brief idea in my head with the layout.
  • I looked at clothing/makeup/props that would fit the genre of R&B and found appropriate styles.
  • I took a photo-shoot of my model and location (different shot types)
  • I used Photoshop to create and develop my magazine pages (drafts and finals)
  • I looked at improvements and acted upon them, for example the layout and different eye catching points of the magazine.
  • I then finalised my magazine pages.
  • Then I produced my evaluation.

Evaluation

For my magazine front cover I researched and analysed other college magazines to give myself ideas on how a college magazine looks and works, I also wanted my magazine to look realistic.
When I researched other magazines I took into account the different conventions.  For example, the magazines have a barcode on their front page, I did this to so that my magazine looked realistic.  I also put the date in the top right corner underneath the mast head so that it would be realistic and so that students would know the day of release.
For my mast head I used the title of 'WYKE WEEKLY'.  I chose this because I wanted my magazine to be a weekly release.  I chose to put the mast head in the colour purple because this was the same colour of the college logo therefore my magazine has a purple colour scheme throughout.
I chose a 'medium shot' for my front cover so that the happy emotion of the student was captured and that her college folders where in the picture, this ties in with the college theme and also shows college life.  In my front cover photo I also captured the college logo within it.  I wanted to do this because then if a member of the public picked up this magazine they would immediately know where its come from and what college the magazine associates with.
On the left hand side of my magazine front cover I added sell lines and a small photo.  The sell lines are there so that the audience know what will feature inside of the magazine, for example, '10 HEALTHIER WAYS TO EAT'.  I added the photo of the library and the college halls so that it gave the reader an insight of what the college looks like and what to expect.
I asked a member of the public on how they thought I could improve my magazine front cover.  They said I could include more colour.  What they meant by this was I could use more colour within my sell lines to make them stand out more and more eye catching for the buyer.  They also said that I could of used more pictures within the sell lines to entice the buyer even more and give them an insight to the college.
Overall I am happy with the final product.

Unused images

I haven't used these images because I had to pick one main image.  I wanted my main image to have the Wyke logo in the background and a pupil of the college on the front.  The photo I picked matched this description.  I also wanted one side image to go with the sell lines on the left hand side.  I picked one of the view when you walk into the main entrance of the college, I picked this as its the main area where pupils will be as the canteen, library, and main hall are there.  I wanted an image that shows the reader the buzz of the college on a day to day basis.
